Dog sore/stiff after activity. Should I rest him or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 45 lbs

Hello! We were walking our high energy beagles Wednesday and one was really pulling because lots of dogs were out. Going crazy. Once we got home we went to store and noticed when we returned he was a little lethargic which is normal after a walk. He woke up the next morning seeming sore or stiff. He’s eating drinking going to bathroom jumping up on couch. But seems stuff or sore and has been wanting to lay down a lot. If he strained a muscle or pulled do we just rest him?

Yes, I would rest Bandit for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!
