My dogs have vomiting and diarrhea. Could it be a contagious virus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 8 months old | 7 lbs

My female pup was vomiting and had diarrhea. She was fine by the following day. My chihuahua started throwing up and had diarrhea. He was fine the following day. My male pup has now started vomiting and having diarrhea. Is there a such thing as a dog virus? The pups eat different food than my chihuahua. They do not eat table food either.

There are several viruses in dogs that can cause GI upset. It's also possible they both got into something that caused GI upset, or there is something such as a parasite that was passed to both. I would bring in a sample of their stool to your vet for a fecal exam to rule out any common issues that could be causing it, and if symptoms continue or worsen, bring the pups in for an exam to check for other issues including viruses, GI upset, allergies, etc that could be the cause.
