My cat's eye is swollen with discharge. Can I use human eye drops?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered

My cats eye is swollen shut and has discharge leaking from it. It looks like it may have been scratched by something. I don’t have the ability to get him to veterinary care right now but I have antibiotic eye drops for human eyes , ciprofloxacin , and prednisolone AC 1% eye drops. Would it be safe for me to use either of them on his eye or should I just leave him to himself. He doesn’t seem to be in pain but he is being lethergic

Another type of human eye drops with prednisolone would be better as, if there is a corneal ulceration, this would be contraindicated. Antibiotic only eye drops would be safer and effective (like eye drops chloramphenicol 0.5%).
