My dog's skin sore won't heal; the scab keeps coming off. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Papillon | Female | spayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 5 lbs

Clara has an open sore. All behavior is normal. There is attached picture. It would appear to be healing but soon after scab would come off and won’t seal. Does not appear to have reach bone only appear to be on the skin. There are no other spots.

This presentation could be due to a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching.
