Why is my dog in pain, crying, and won't lie flat after eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 70 lbs

My 5 year old Male pitbull has been in obvious pain for several hours now. He did not jump at all when I came home and was crying as he kept sitting uncomfortably. I took him outside repeatedly thinking it was painful diarrhea but he went normally. I massaged his body to find the source of pain but nothing made him react. He is resting now and seems to not want to lie flat. My vet said no food for 24 hours and to follow up tomorrow. Any ideas on what this might be?

If Lebowski has had table food recently, it is possible he may have abdominal pain from pancreatitis/inflammation of the pancreas, which is common after dogs eat a sudden high fat (usually human food) meal. Abdominal pain typical presents as a tense abdomen/hunched posture, not wanting to lay flat. Treatment for this is usually fluid therapy (SQ or IV), a bland diet such as boiled rice and chicken for 3 days +/- anti-nausea medication. Other possible causes include back pain/a back injury or other musculoskeletal injury/sprain if he is not limping. Your vet may recommend bloodwork and abdominal X-rays to rule out bloat/a foreign body obstruction/pancreatitis depending on how he looks tomorrow. Good luck!
