Is my pregnant dog in labor at 56 days? What are the common signs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old

My dog sasha is around 56 days pregnant but is showing all signs of the 1st stage labour. She isn’t eating and was sick once yesterday. Panting, tiredness, restless and pacing the floors and she scratches into our sofa to try and get comfy and won’t drink anything except from sweet flavoured things. She has had a few snacks today like cheese and milk but she won’t eat huge portions and she won’t poo. I am just really confused and wanting to know is she definitely in the first stage of labour

56 days is a bit early, but it is possible she could be in labor, or closer to her due date than thought. Signs of labor can include visible contractions, changes in body temperature, lack of appetite, and waxing of the nipples (producing a milk substance). I would keep an eye on her, and if she doesn't have any puppies within a few hours of signs of labor, or she seems in great distress/is extremely exhausted take her into your vet ASAP for care to make sure there isn't a stuck puppy or other illness or complication causing her early symptoms.

They typically have a decrease in appetite and seem restless. They usually exhibit nesting behavior in a safe , secure spot. The temperature will usually decrease to 99 or below when it gets close. The normal time frame is 58-63 days. You may notice a clear, mucous discharge when it is time. Contractions will follow. If you notice a brown or black discharge then she needs to be checked for a complication b

If Ellie is a first time mom, she may be a bit longer in her pregnancy. Signs of impending labor include enlargement of the mammary glands, restlessness, changes in temperature, and changes in eating habits. The beginning of labor may be marked with pacing, spending time in the whelping box, visible contractions on the side of the body, greenish discharge from the vulva, and straining and pushing. If you think there may be a problem such as a stuck puppy, or feel that Ellie should be in labor by now, it is best to seek veterinary care to make sure mom and pups are doing OK.
