My cat's lip is swollen again. What's the cause and how to prevent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 11 days old | 7 lbs

Sarge was always kind of a sickly baby, but since about 6 months old he has been very healthy. Right before Christmas his lower lip became swollen, and took about a week to go down. But 3 days ago his swollen lip came back. I thought maybe his brother had hooked him in the lip playing, but this time they all have their claw caps on, so there are no claws to do any damage. What do you think could have caused it, and what can I do to keep it from happening again?

Poor baby! I have no idea what could have caused it. If they are rough and rambunctious then there is no telling. They can jump or fall and hit themselves. Also cats like to nibble when playing so this could have caused it as well. Unfortunately there isn’t a great way to prevent it from happening again. If the swelling doesn’t go down I would have you vet take a look to make sure there isn’t an infection or something stuck in the lip causing issues. I hope this helps!
