What's causing my outdoor cat's ear scratching, bumps, and redness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male

Hello, I'm Ioanna. My cat has been scratching his ears like crazy since he got inside. Although his right ear seems absolutely fine, both ears are irritating him. The left ear has 3 bumbs on the outside and a red-ish color on the inside. He goes outside a lot, he's 8 months old, he's not vaccineted yet (sadly) and he apears to have feline acne as well. I'm not sure if I have to be worried. Thank you for you patience.

Poor Baby! My biggest concern is that he may have some type of ear infection (yeast or bacteria) or ear mites. All of these things can occur deeper in the canal and be very itchy. Sometimes it is difficult to see without the proper equipment. I would have your vet take a look at him before he gets worse and before he causes any more sores on the outside of his ears from the excessive scratching. Your vet will also be able to look at his feline acne at that time. You can try benadryl twice a day for the itching but I am afraid it will not be enough. See link below. https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/cat/benadryl/#

Phanouris could have an ear infection, ear mites or fleas, or allergies. I would recommend seeing a vet for an ear exam - they might also want to check a cytology for mites or yeast/bacteria. Vaccines could probably be administered at this appointment as well.
