My dog won't eat his food, only human treats. Could it be serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 85 lbs

Wallace hasn’t been eating his food the last couple days. He seems fine acting normal and hyper as usual and goes #2 and everything. And he does eat if I put treats (yesterday pizza crust) under his food. He’ll eat it to get to the treat. A week or so ago I started giving him a brisket (cooked) I messed up and just froze to give him as treats. He has had problems with people food before giving him diarrhea which he did have 2 days ago. Not since or before. I feed him twice a dayMaybe too much?

I worry that the people food could be causing the upset stomach and possibly even pancreatitis. Foods higher in fat (brisket) make dogs at higher risk for pancreatitis. I would try to feed him just plain boneless, skinless chicken and white rice in a small meals to see if this settles his tummy. If not, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to rule out pancreatitis and get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. In the future, I would stick with food low in fat like chicken or ground lean turkey as treats. You can also just mix in the canned version of his regular diet to help entice him to eat his food. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon!
