Why is my dog twitching, staring, and acting strange at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 9.5 lbs

Kobe is fine all day and the past couple of nights he is staying in this one spot, backside twitching, and staring at nothing. He has Ben licking the carpet and still nibbling but a little louder. He whimpers or does his little growl for us to pay attention. What could it be? Drinking a little more water but not tons eating ok. I think a softer version of his food I will try. Ok sorry just thinking out loud. Thank you

This sounds quite strange. It is difficult to say what the problem could be without seeing him in person. I would try to video the episodes at night to help your vet with a diagnosis. He could be having mini-seizures or something similar. It could also be some type of muscle spasms. I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet may want to check blood work on him to ensure all of his electrolytes are okay. You could try Benadryl at night to see if this helps him sleep better. I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/
