My dog has bloody diarrhea after starting antibiotics. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bedlington Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old | 35 lbs

Our dog had diarrhea for several days but had no change in diet. Had a vet visit today and they found no parasites in his stool, so they sent us home with antibiotics, probiotics and Pro Plan EN canned food. After eating and takin his meds, George had diarrhea outside with blood in it. Could this be related to the antibiotics or should I take him to an ER for further evaluation? Or should I continue to monitor?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about George. I’m sorry he isn’t doing well. Antibiotics can cause GI upset such as diarrhea, but I would be concerned about the blood as that isn’t a typical side effect of them. When dogs have diarrhea, their bowels become irritated and you can see some blood. I’d watch him for now, and if the bloody stools continue, then I would take him into the vet. I hope this helps!
