My dog has raw, scabby, hairless spots and isn't eating normally.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 6 months old | 59 lbs

My dog had a spot on her back right leg a week and a half ago that was raw. I assumed she had scraped it. Since then it has scabbed over a darkgrey/black color. Today she has the same raw spot on her face. Both spots were hairless and the one on her face was a little slimy. She has not been fully eating the last two days, and although has consumed all of the food we put out for her, has not consumed it as quickly as she normally does. Please advise.

Hi, and thanks for your question. Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to localized spots of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any).
