My dachshund jumps. How to keep his back strong and prevent IVDD?

My dachshund is 6 and has luckily not had any back issues. I'm worried about his back and am aware of invertebral disc disease that dachshunds are prone to. Hes very active and somtimes does bad things he shouldn't do like jumping off furniture and other objects. I try to pervent or stop him from doing so. However, he ends up doing it anyways. What can I do to keep his back is protected and strong? And free for IVDD? Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 16 lbs

Hello. I wish I could tell you what to do, but you already know what is bad for Oscar. All you can do is intervene as much as you can to hopefully prevent a disc rupture. Keeping Oscar slim & prevent any obesity, & encouraging as much sane exercise as possible ( long leash walks, swimming ) will help to strengthen his back muscles. Always lift Oscar with 2 hands & never let him just dangle from one arm. There is an unwritten rule that if a dachshund makes it past 7 years of age without suffering a back injury, they seem to be out of the woods. There is some truth to this. So, the fact that you are aware of possible problems puts you way ahead of the curve. With a little bit of luck, Oscar will do well. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
