My dog has a non-painful lump under his arm. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 lbs

I noticed today that he has this underneath his arm. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, he hasn’t messed with it, it isn’t itchy. It’s just there. But I was wondering if you could tell me what it is! Thank you

That looks like a mass or perhaps a very inflamed tick or spider bite. It’s impossible to say based on the photo. Regardless the area looks very angry and I recommend to have Scout seen by his veterinarian within the next 24 hours. If it is a skin mass, the doctor will likely recommend to aspirate the tissue to check for a skin cancer called a Mast Cell tumor. If it is more related to a bug bite, it’s possible that area is infected. Make sure Scout does not lick at that area as it will make it worse. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!
