My big dog has a yeast ear infection. Can I treat it without sedation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 85 lbs

My dog is big 85 lbs. Vet say dog must be sedated to get a look into his ear. Muzzle didn’t work. It’s undoubtedly a yeast/fungal type infection from the odor. Lucky Wont let you near it or touch it. Do to lucky needing his rabies vaccination (he just turned 1) as well as needing nudered and many other equally important medical expenses, I want to skip having him sedated and ear examined and just treat it with oral antibiotics. I was thinking 500mg amoxicillin 2x daily for 2wks Thoughts?

Unfortunately this won't work. The ear has a poor blood supply, so topical medications are needed to treat an ear infection. In addition, antibiotics do not treat yeast or fungal infections. You will need to have Lucky sedated to have his ear examined and treated. If you have the money now, you can combine this exam with the neutering and rabies vaccine.
