My parakeets panic when my hand is in their cage. How to bond?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered

I had two parakeets and I’ve had them for maybe over two years. I’ve watched several tutorials on how to bond with them and nothing seems to work. I’ve spent ages and hours working with them but I’m not sure it’s working. They are scared and panic like crazy if my hand is in the cage. I want to play with birds and have a good relationship with them. I’ve never grabbed them or forced them to do anything. I love them very much and I want them to be happy and healthy. I don’t know what to do.

Thanks for reaching out. There's a book titled "A Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot" that is a good reference. It is difficult to describe and diagnose behavioral concern without visualizing what is going on. Not all birds are tame. Some just too scared. See if they will come out of their cage on their own (leave door open). They might be more protective of their cage, and less so outside. Good luck.
