My FIV+ cat has bloody diarrhea with mucus and won't eat. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

Greg is about 4 years old and FIV +. He's been having a run of yellow, bloody stools with green to orange mucus that went from semi formed to pure thin liquid every 15 minutes to half an hour. He had a fecal float and Cytology done on Wednesday- negative. He was put on Albon and Mitranidazol. When I brought him home his blanket was streaked with blood and orange mucus, and he's refusing food, but drinking well. His vet said to give the meds to Saturday, but I'm scared for him.

If he continues to refuse food, or if he vomits, or if he continues to have frequent watery diarrhea you may want to ask your vet about hospitalization for IV fluids and antibiotics. It does take some time for these medications to help with diarrhea, but you know Greg best and if you are worried it's always better to err on the side of caution and recheck. I would not be particularly concerned about blood being present - it can often simply go along with inflammation in the colon.
