My 4mo puppy has diarrhea, is skinny, and always hungry. Is it food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Malinois | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 5 days old | 20 lbs

My 4mo Puppy is always with extremely soft stools sometimes even diarrhea. He is always hungry, skinny but always animated and playful. I went to three different foods looking to improve. I’ve tried Ol’roy, Merrick and now Royal Canin. He’s eating 4cups daily of dry food. He was desparasite when he was three months. Last week he had an episode of diarrhea, I gave him white rice, boiled chicken an 1/8 tablet of Pepto Bismol and he improves. Now I started Royal Canin and he Is again with problems.

Poor Apollo! I would go back to the chicken and rice and start a probiotic like fortiflora. If his stool improves, I would SLOWLY start to integrate royal canin into the chicken and rice over 10-14 days. Abruptly switching foods may be causing the diarrhea. If the diarrhea isn't improving or comes back, I think he needs to be looked at again. I would have your vet take a look at him so they can do another fecal to ensure there isn't any additional parasites. I would also make sure they rule out giardia. If all is negative, your vet's next step may be blood work or a GI panel that rules out absorption issues. I hope this helps to guide you in your next steps.
