Can I use other food to hide pills for my cat on a kidney diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 19 years and 1 month old | 9.5 lbs

Hi! Tony is on a kidney diet for early stages of kidney disease. He also takes amlodipine, methimazole and a tumil K supplement. It’s hard to pill him so I hide his pill in another yummy cat food that I form into a tiny meatball. In looking for foods to do so, is it important to only look at the dry matter percentage of protein so that he’s not eating something that is not good for the kidneys or are there other nutrient percentages I should pay attention to as well? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. In terms of a small portion of his food to get his medications into him, it isn't THAT important. As long as his main portion of his food is the kidney diet that is fine. The main factor is low protein. Best of luck with Tony!
