My dog has gastroenteritis and won't eat or drink after vet visit.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male

My dog was diagnosed with gastroenteritis last week and since then we have fed him a restricted diet which has seemed to greatly improve issues with his lower GI issues (blood in diarrhoea). However he has not always wanted to eat and yesterday he was sick. Today he won’t eat and after taking him to the vets he was given an anti-sickness injection. Since coming home he has become sicker and how won’t drink.

Hello. In some cases, dogs with severe gastrointestinal disease will need to be hospitalized, administered IV fluids & continue on systemic medications that can be administered by injection. This may be the quickest way to get your pet well, especially since it has been a week & he is still not well. If bloodwork has not been done, this would help in perhaps understanding what is going on. Call your vet to report his lack of response to the current treatment & go from there. I hope all is well soon, & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
