My cat is vomiting. Vet says wait. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 21 lbs

My cat has been vomiting roughly every 12 hours almost like clockwork for the last two weeks. He seems completely fine other than the vomiting (good appetite, energetic, etc). I’ve taken him to the vet, and they think it is from changing his food and had me start him on a sensitive stomach formula and a probiotic. Three days later he is still vomiting. They don’t think he needs bloodwork or an X-ray and say it will just take time, but I am beyond concerned.

Poor Gonzo! I would agree that vomiting every 12 hours for two weeks is very concerning, and some diagnostic testing such as blood work, x-rays, and/or an abdominal ultrasound is definitely indicated. If your veterinarian does not want to pursue any diagnostic testing to find the problem, I would get a second opinion from another vet in your area. This is not normal - the sooner you can find out what's wrong, the sooner he can get started on appropriate treatment for the problem.
