Why is my dog throwing up blood and can't keep food or water down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello! My dog has been throwing up for the last two days now and is having a hard time keeping anything down. At first it was food and starting yesterday he began to throw up mucus as well. At one point he threw up mucus with two or three tiny spots of clotted blood. We tried feeding him some small pieces of bland cooked chicken this morning and he couldn’t keep that down. Now he’s bringing up water and what I believe to be stomach bile. What should I do and what could it be? Thank you so much!

Oh dear! I'm sorry to hear that your pup is sick. There are many different things that could cause vomiting like this, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine him and run some tests. Some possible causes would include a GI problem like pancreatitis or an intestinal obstruction, a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, parvo (if he's young and not fully vaccinated), or ingestion of something toxic. If he's been vomiting for two days and can't keep anything down, this sounds like a serious problem - so I would definitely recommend taking him to the vet today to be seen. He/she can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.
