Why are my dog's testicles swollen, red, and not getting better?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 25 lbs

Solo has had this this irritation on his balls and it's been a little swollen and pretty red for a couple days and I thought it might be from the carpet or the other dogs but I don't know and it's not getting better. They always had a dark color to them but not red like this. Hes been eating and drinking and using the bathroom.

I would recommend having Solo examined immediately. It is possible that Solo has orchitis (something causing swelling of the testicles), or even a testicular torsion. The redness and thickening of the skin is likely irritation from him licking, likely due to pain or discomfort. I would want to ensure he does not have an infection (checking his temperature, and running a Complete Cell Count), then I would examine the area to determine if the testicles are twisted, if they feel abnormal, or if they are painful. It is likely that neutering would resolve this issue permanently, but I would want any infection to be resolved prior to surgery. I hope this helps. That looks very uncomfortable for him.

Those look incredibly red and irritated, and if he is uncomfortable and licking them I would be concerned. It is best to seek care from your vet or an emergency clinic right away as issues such as testicular torsion can cause swelling/discoloration of the testicles and is a serious issue that requires immediate treatment.
