Why is my sensitive stomach dog vomiting water and so thirsty?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 years and 7 months old

UPDATE - Tot has mass in one nostril so food must be strong smelling to get her to eat, but has VERY sensitive tummy. Been trying (very delicately and gradually mixing w/bland diet) to find the right diet. Went for usual 15 min walk 1 hour after dinner tonight. She vomitted multiple times, all after drinking water. I picked up water, she laid down and went to sleep. 20 minutes later, she woke up and vomitted twice again and is now circling the house searching for water. Vomit has mucous and foo.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If tater tot is vomiting water I recommend a visit to the veterinarian. Unfortunately we do not have access to your previous post so I’m unsure of what other medical issues she has. But if unable to keep down water she can easily become dehydrated. She needs an exam to find out why she is vomiting, and then may need some medications to help or further diagnostics to find the cause. I hope she is better soon.

Hello, sorry to hear about Tot. It sounds like there could be multiple potential causes for her upset stomach. They may include anything from this mass, to any medications she may be on, to her sensitive stomach (due to any inflammatory bowel disease or if this mass has spread to her GI tract or yes associated with her diet). Given her history and that it sounds like most of her episodes are self limiting, I would resume her water back after a few hours and then her diet. Additionally, it would be helpful to confirm that her episodes are indeed vomiting and not regurgitation as these can be caused by different things. If she continues to have these GI signs, then I would recommend that you recheck with her veterinarian to make sure there is nothing else ongoing besides her sensitive tummy. Hope this helps and best of luck.
