Why is my cat's dandruff not improving with vet-recommended care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Snowshoe | Female | spayed | 9.8 lbs

Hello! My cat Opal has been suffering from extreme dandruff. Her skin is so dry. Her fur is just coated. I talked to my vet and he told me to add extra Omega 3 to her diet & make sure she was drinking plenty of water. I bought the Omega 3 suppliment & I mix some w/ her food each morning as directed. (It's liquid) I bought a pet drinking fountain which has doubled Opal's water intake. I also bathe her once a month w/ special oatmeal dry skin/ dandruff shampoo. However the dandruff remains!!

You are doing the right things. Changing her diet may also help. I recommend a brand called Royal Canin as it is geared towards pets with skin conditions. Continue the supplement and the water fountain. If she continues to have dandruff or the coat feels oily, it can be the sign of an underlying disease such as allergies, over active oil glands or something that causes an increased water loss such as kidney or thyroid disease. Have her seen by her veterinarian if she is not improving. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
