Is peppermint oil toxic to cats when used as a rat repellent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi,a week ago a rat sneaked in my vestibule, it's still there, I want to drive it away without killing it and want to use something that's not harmful for my cats who all pass many times through the vestibule, also want to keep it away from my room to not get in there, I've heard peppermint oil drives rats away so I put many drops outside of my door and on the doorstep, but the peppermint smell is strong and fills the air in my room too,is it bad for my cats to inhale it, should I remove it? thank

Yes. Remove the peppermint oil and clean any spots where it was applied. Peppermint essential oil can be toxic or harmful to cats. Consider an electronic pest repeller and seal any holes or cracks that would allow rodents to enter. Steel wool can be used to prevent them from chewing through.
