My guinea pig is peeing blood and sand-like substance. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 6 months old | 2 lbs

My guinea pig just bled and peed out almost a sand like substance. I do not know what to do.... I thought she was better and a week later i found dots of blood in her cage. Do you know what this would be?

Hi, and thanks for your question. These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
