Why is my dog eating poop all of a sudden? How do I stop him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 15 lbs

After 13 months of life, I’ve gotten two daycare reports in the last two weeks that Jack was eating poop. Today he came home with some dried in his fur (on his head) so I assume he may have rolled in it. What’s with the newfound fascination with poop? Concerned and embarrassed! Anything I can do?

Jack is so cute! Unfortunately, this is a common problem with dogs, and some of them do it simply because they like the taste. It can also be a sign of intestinal worms or a nutritional deficiency, so make sure he is up to date on his deworming treatments and you are feeding him a high quality food. It would also help if daycare picked up his feces and the other dogs's feces right after they go, which would prevent him from having access. I hope this helps!
