Why is my unspayed dog's nipple firm, warm, and producing yellow milk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 55 lbs

Im the owner of a 3yo female pitty who has, for various resaons, not been spayed. She goes through false pregnancies every 6 months however this time around one of her teats has become firm, warm, and produces yellow milk only when massaged. I have been alternately applying cold and warm compresses to the area thus far, however my cat is currently undergoing chemo so I cant afford more vet bills. My dog eats, drinks, and plays normally but seems slightly lethargic. What can I do to help her?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Kira. I'd be concerned that her symptoms could be due to mastitis. This is an infection of the mammary glands, and it would cause the area to be warm and firm. Mastitis can be fatal without treatment, and this unfortunately cannot be treated with home remedies. She has to see a vet today. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com http://bestfriends.org/resources/financial-aid-pets http://lessonsfromaparalyzeddog.com/when-pet-owners-cant-afford-veterinary-bills/ http://www.dogheirs.com/resources-affordable-veterinary-care/ Check out these resources to see if one can help you, and please take her into a vet. Best of luck.
