My cat has a clear watery eye discharge. Will it go away on its own?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

My cat Spirit's right eye has been watering for about 2 weeks. The water is clear there is no pus involved at all it's just a little bit but this is unusual for him. It is clear water. He is not acting any different he still wants to play, he's still eating, he still going to the bathroom normally. I did some research on Google and it said that sometimes things like this can go away by themselves. Is this true.

Sometimes it will go away. Definitely watch and make sure you do not notice any redness to the eye or colored discharge or squinting. This would indicate a further problem. I commonly start these cats on a supplement called Lysine as it can help if this is a viral cause. If he is still have discharge after another week, then I think it’s best to take him in. He may need some eye drops to clear up the situation. Obviously if he looks worse at any time, take him in as well. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
