How to quarantine a new kitten in a cage with an existing house cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 27 days old | 2 lbs

How far away (in feet) should I keep a newly adopted kitten (formerly outside, socialized semi-feral) away from my house cat during any health quarantine period, as I do not have a separate room to keep her in, only a cage?

Congratulations on your new pet! Physical distance is not as important as actual contact. If your new kitten is in a cage or crate, this still likely allows for the cats to touch each other through the bars. Certain viruses can be transmitted in nasal discharge, saliva, and cats can scratch each other even through small openings. I recommend trying to keep this cage in an area your other cat cannot reach or in a bathroom. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!

In that case you will need two cages, as one cage won't have any effect if the other cat is freely roaming. if you have two cages then 15 feet should be enough for adequate isolation. remember that you can be a vessel for a potential infection too, if you touch the kitten you need to make sure to wash your hands before touching the other cat.
