My cat's purr sounds bubbly all of a sudden. Should I be worried?

If he is not sneezing, doesn't have nasal discharge and isn't wheezing any other time I wouldn't worry! I hope this helps!

The changes in your cat's purring could be a result of an upper respiratory infection, asthma, masses on the vocal cords, etc. Your vet should examine him to determine if there are signs of infection, and may need to take chest x-rays to evaluate the lungs for signs of asthma or masses. You first need to determine the cause of these changes before determining what will help manage them.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! What a good description! I know the noise exactly! If this is a new sound for her when purring then it could be mild nasal congestion from an upper respiratory tract infection URI) or allergies. Most URI's are viral and run their course in about 2 weeks. I think as long as she is eating/drinking, active and not doing the noise any other time then when purring that it is okay to monitor her for now. I wish you both the best!

As long as Templeton is always breathing comfortably and doesn't seem to have an increased effort to his breathing, this noise is likely nothing to worry about. A cat's respiratory rate should be less than 30 breaths per minute when sleeping. You can count the number of breaths that he takes in 30 seconds, and multiply this times 2. Purring is generally a sign that a cat is content, so as long as he is otherwise acting OK I would not be worried! I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Templeton!

Voice change can be caused by many things. Cats do not get colds like people do. Most cats are exposed to several upper respiratory viruses over their lifetime that can flare up occasionally causing sneezing, runny eyes or nose, and occasionally voice change. A change can also occur with anything going on with the larynx (voice box) including trauma, masses (benign or malignant), nerve or muscle disorders, etc. Additionally some cats who have asthma or heartworm disease may manifest this with a voice change. So, if your kitty is exhibiting any other symptoms and/or is not feeling well the best plan would be to have your family vet examine her. Inflammation or infection can cause changes to the way an animal breathes as well as something stuck in the airway. What a pretty girl! If there is a change in the tissue in the back of her throat, that could potentially cause the "gurgle." If theres a lot of inflammation in her throat, or a mass or tumor of some kind. Ideally, take her to your vet for an exam. If you can get a video of exactly what your concern is, that may be helpful, in case she isn't doing it at the time you take her in to the vet. It sounds like she is meowing more... it would be a good idea to check her bloodwork including her thyroid to see if she needs her dosage adjusted as well, though I doubt this is related to the "gurgle." Sorry to hear Smoky isn't acting normally. If your current veterinarian hasn't performed diagnostics to back up his statements, I would consider taking him elsewhere in order to do a little more investigation since there have been persistent clinical signs. Abnormal breathing and increased nasal discharge could be an indicator of an upper respiratory infection, feline asthma, cardiopulmonary/cardiovascular disease, or a primary respiratory condition. X-rays of the chest would be the first and foremost diagnostic test to perform in order to rule some of these in/out. There are medical therapies as well that can be attempted instead of diagnostics, but if you would like to get down to the crux of the issue, the diagnostics would be preferable.
