Why are my betta fish's eyes red, swollen, and he's bumping things?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Unknown - Fish | Male

I’m not sure if my betta fish had popeye. Both of his eyes have red in the white parts, but I’m unsure if I bought him like that or not. His eyes are not cloudy or extremely swollen. They look a little bigger. But, he isn’t responding to my finger like he usually does and seems to be bumping into the filter. I fed him and he found the pellet. I removed the plastic plant I thought he was scraping against. Now, he’s just staying around the perimeters. I first noticed this over 20 hours ago.

Check the water chemistry and temperature. If incorrect, either can cause stress which will lead to illness. Perform a water change if necessary. Use only aged or conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent further stress or shock. You can use ampicillin for fish in the tank. It can be found in the aquarium section of the local Petco. Follow label directions carefully and treat for 10-14 days then reassess his condition. It is important to maintain pristine water quality during this time to allow for healing.
