My dog is vomiting frequently and throwing up bile. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 55 lbs

My dog, Daisy, has been throwing up a lot lately. She threw up bile in the middle of the night a couple days ago 3 times and today she threw up numerous times throughout the day. As a puppy she would throw up every once in awhile and looking back on it, I definitely should have taken her to the vet but always thought maybe it was the food I was feeding her. I just always made different assumptions but now I'm so worried since she is vomiting a lot lately.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you have not done a proper food trial (New food with a novel protein fed for at least 4 to 6 weeks) then I would recommend doing so if you have not done so already. Otherwise, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having her blood tested and abdominal x-rays taken to start. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.

Dietary indiscretion, inflammatory bowel disease or pancreatitis would be top differentials to consider based on the symptoms described. If you haven't tried switching her to a novel protein diet (duck, rabbit, kangaroo, venison) you could try that first. If that fails, you should follow up with your veterinarian to discuss diagnostics including fecal exam, abdominal ultrasound and testing for pancreatitis.

Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would start all over again by fasting Pip for 24 hours and then putting her boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat for two more days, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea, or if Pip gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
