My dog has diarrhea for 2 days, bland diet not working. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Greyhound | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 85 lbs

My greyhound has been having diarrhea the past two days. I started the bland diet to no avail. The stool is orangeish-brown and watery, minimal amount of form if any. No other symptoms. Acting normally, no vomitting, appetite fantastic, drinking a normal amount of water.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like a colitis (inflammation of the colon) which can be brought on by eating something naughty or simply something new (flavor or diet change, treat change). It can also be brought on by stress (change in schedule, new person/animal in the house). In any case, add a probiotic (purina fortiflora for example) and continue the bland diet and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time Lonnie is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious. Best of luck to you and Lonnie!

Hello. Since Lonnie is acting fine, eating & drinking well, there is no need to rush him to your vet. I would continue with the bland diet, 25% plain cooked chicken & 75% boiled white rice for another day or so, giving him small amounts frequently. I would also add a good probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable KP ( available at Petco ). The human product Culturelle is also used frequently. You might just bring a stool sample to your vet in the next day or so just to rule out intestinal parasites, but if diarrhea persists, Lonnie may need antibiotics. So if he still has diarrhea into next week, please see your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
