Why did my cat's healed tail wound reopen with pus and hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 6 lbs

My cat had an abscess about 5 months ago on the skin right near her tail to the right a little bit, I saw a vet gave her medication & cleaned it twice a day for 2wks with warm salty water plus sponging it with a warm cloth 3 times a day, it healed amazingly and now 5 months later in the same spot she seems to have a very little puss spot & missing hair, could the old wound have reopened? The vet did advise that cats body’s heal from inside out & therefore the wound would slowly come to surface

Your vet is right and apparently this was a seriously deep infected wound. Sometimes there is a so called "foreign body" in the wound, that cannot be found and the body will slowly get rid of it by making pus around it and that way moving it to the surface. I would have the vet recheck this wound, especially since it reopened. Apparently there is still some sort of irritant there that keeps it from healing properly.
