Are iris plants toxic for cats? What if my cat just nibbled one?

Are iris douglisana plants toxic for cats? And if so, if they just nibble on it, will this be at an amount that will be toxic?

Irises are toxic to cats, and nibbling on the plant can cause salivation, drooling, and potentially vomiting. I would not keep irises in the house so that Twitchy does not nibble on it. I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Iris plants are mildly toxic to dogs, causing lethargy, vomiting, drooling and diarrhea. If he is acting normally now then it is likely that the toxin is out of his system. If you are sure that the plant was an Iris then it should be OK, however if you are unsure of which plant then I would recommend having Lou checked for his kidney function. Best of luck with Lou!

Can I have tulips in the same room as my cat like on a top shelf were he can’t get near them ? I understand that tulips are toxic to cats but unfortunately I bought them before even knowing
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! You are correct tulips are toxic to cats. The toxins are more concentrated in the bulbs. If a cat ingests a lot of the plant it can experience drooling, GI upset, breathing problems, high heart rate and neurologic signs like seizures. If you want to keep the plants be sure to put them where Lumi can’t get too. Cats are athletic and can jump up high. I hope this help!

My cat ate a bit of a tulip’s leaf and stem. He’s 12 lbs and about 7 years old. He hasn’t vomited. I heard tulips are toxic. Should be go to a vet?
If Hiccup only bit it and didn't ingest any, he'll likely be OK. However, if you are concerned or know how much he ingested, you can contact the Pet Poison Helpline - https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/ - (there is a fee for this service) to see if any action needs to be taken. If he does start showing any signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, drooling, etc, seeking veterinary care immediately is best.

Tulips are part of the lily family and can be toxic to cats. They contain a chemical known as Tulipilan A that can cause allergic reactions in humans just from touching a tulip. But because humans are larger than cats and don’t typically eat tulips, the toxin doesn’t pose as much risk for us. Tulipilan A is found in all parts of the tulip, but it is found in the highest concentrations in the bulb of the plant. The flower, leaves, and stem all contain smaller amounts of the toxin, but it is still enough to cause respiratory issues for small animals such as cats. Although your cat eating a tulip flower or leaf is still cause for concern, it’s not as bad as it would be if he were to consume some of the tulip bulbs.Tulips may or may not pose serious problems for your cat. It just depends on how much of the plant your cat ate, what part of the plant he ate, and how big he or she is. But, even with eating a small amount of tulip, your cat is likely to exhibit symptoms. My cat tiger may have ingested the leaves of a hyacinthplant
Hyacinths leaves can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. In large enough quantities, it can deadly especially if the bulb is eaten. If Tiger ate them in the past hour or two, have him seen by your veterinarian. Vomiting can be induced to get the leaves up and out.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! That sounds like a beautiful gift. I agree that I would keep Mirz away from the plant, and ensure that she cannot access it when you are not there. It is fine for you to touch her after touching the plant. The toxicity comes from ingesting/chewing any part of the plant, not from the contact itself.

That looks like a Philodendron and it is toxic to cats and dogs. It is not life threatening. This plant contains tiny little crystals in the leaves called Calcium oxalate crystals. When the keaves are chewed, the plant can cause drooling, mouth pain, inappetance, vomiting and pawing at the mouth. Sometimes swelling of the oral tissue can occur. It is best to keep this plant out of the reach of your cats. If that is not possible, remove it from the house.

Are rose type plants/petals poisonous for cats?
Roses themselves are not toxic to cats, but the thorns can scratch Queen, and eating the leaves and stems could cause her GI upset. In addition, if there are any pesticides spayed on the roses, those would toxic to her.

As long as she only got a tiny amount, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. However, these plants can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and burning or irritation in the mouth, along with breathing difficulty, coma, or even death, if a sufficient amount of leaves is ingested. Keep an eye on her, if she will let you look in her mouth, check for any irritation, if she starts displaying any adverse symptoms, such as drooling, vomiting, lethargy or loss of appetite, get her in to see your vet right away.

If this is a corn plant (Cornstalk dracaena), here is the information about this plant- In cats: dilated pupils, breathing difficulty, abdominal pain, increased heartrate and drooling. In both cats and dogs: vomiting, depression, inappetence, drooling, incoordination, and weakness. Don't ever give milk to adult cats or dogs. They cannot break down the sugar in milk (lactose) and can develop vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, intestinal cramping, etc. They are essentially lactose intolerant once they grow up. If Tigger develops any of the signs listed above, call your vet immediately. Good luck
