I am getting a new puppy soon and I am worried about Parvo in the backyard. We had a pup about 3 or 4 years ago that got Parvo from the backyard and passed away. Now I have read that Parvo usually leaves an area after 6mo to a year; however, when we had our last pup we had already been moved in this house for 4/5 years. So im unsure of what to do or if it was even in the backyard. Will my puppy be safe back there? How safe will he be if he's only had his first Parvo shot?

It's true that parvo is very stable in the environment and can last as long as a year, but I would not be too worried if it's been a few years since the yard was contaminated. It's always difficult to know exactly where they get infected, but it's unlikely for one to get infected in an environment where there has been multiple years without known contamination. I would not worry too much about letting your pup in the yard, but I do understand your concern. Having one vaccine is helpful for preventing infection and can keep an infection from getting too bad. However, it's not 100% effective. He will be most protected when he gets his last booster around 16-20 weeks of age. It's important to ensure he gets vaccinated every 2-4 weeks until that last booster, because that will protect him the most. It will also be good to limit his contact with other dogs and other areas where dogs have been until his last booster. I hope that helps and all is well with Bentley.

It is unlikely that he would get parvo if it has been a year and he has had 3 vaccinations. You could, however, wait until 2 weeks after his last vaccination to be completely sure his immunity has peaked.
