My cat pees on the rug daily. How can I get her to use the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Female | spayed | 10 years and 10 months old | 8 lbs

My cat has started urinating on a rug in the living room. Its always in the same spot and once a day. It started in the morning, and now it's in the evening just before I get home from work. I moved her litter box about 10ft from where she is urinating. I clean it up as soon as I find it, using pet mess cleaners. I am using puppy pads under the rug to minimize the mess. I don't think it's a bladder infection as she still uses the litter box, and its only once per day.

Even though it is only once a day I would still recommend checking for a urinary tract infection. I would have your veterinarian get a urine sample. If this is clear I would recommend talking to them about putting Sally on a urinary stress diet and potentially medication. This can be behavioral and cats can usually do well with those two.
