Spayed dog's vulva enlarged, humping toys. Could she be in heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Female | unspayed | 3 years old | 11 lbs

Hi there, I have a 3 years old Peke, spayed (the ovaries removed) in October, during the past week her vulva is enlarged. There is no discharge. She is peeing and eating normally. Although she keeps “humping” her toys...occasionally. I asked the vet who performed the surgery if it could be stumped pyometra and he’s very sure that it cannot be. I am getting very worried. Any ideas what it could be? The vets in my country are with no experience. Thanks in advance

Hi. If she is showing signs of heat, it is possible that some ovarian tissue was left behind unintentionally. There are blood tests that can be done to check hormone levels or you couls schedule an ultrasound or an exploratory surgery to look for any reminents. I would see if the swelling occurs again in approx 6 months. Good luck
