Why is my indoor cat throwing up dry food but not her wet food lately?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

For the past few days my cat has been throwing up anytime she eats her normal dry food. I switched to wet food for 2 days and she managed to kept it all down. I just tried to feed her the dry food again mixed with warm water and she threw it up minutes later. She is strictly an indoor cat and there have been no dietary/life changes recently which is leaving me confused and concerned.

There are a few different things that could be going on here. She could have an intestinal parasite (even though she's indoors only), a organ issue that is making her feel poorly, a foreign object in her stomach or intestines, or could even have Inflammatory bowel disease. I would recommend taking her in for a vet exam for an exam, general bloodwork, and an x-ray to see if any causes can be found and then starting treatment based on what they see.
