Swelling near dog's incision a month after surgery. ER or wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My yellow lab, 14 and 80lb., had emergency pyometra surgery about a month ago. I just noticed swelling on her stomach, right side of the incision. Is this hernia? Or infection possible after a month? Should I take her to ER or can she wait for a few days to go to her regular vet? She's not in distress. Eating, drinking, peeing and pooing normal. Please help!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A swelling on her stomach beside the incision is most likely a seroma, which is just a fluid filled sac. These resorb on their own over time. As long as the swelling isn't hot, painful, and she is acting normally, just get it checked in a few days. If she is acting weird or sick, and if the swelling is hot or painful, get her to the ER. Best of luck with your girl!
