My dog is limping but acting normal. Should I rest her or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 15 days old | 35 lbs

We have a 5 month old terrier mix who started limping last night on her front right leg. I checked up and down the entire leg for pain but got no pain response. I also checked the paw for foreign objects but found no wounds or debris. She is able to put weight on it and she is behaving pretty normally. What would be the next step?

If she is acting otherwise normally I would suggest you just rest her for a couple days and see if the lameness persists. By rest I mean leash walk only; no running, jumping or playing. No stairs if you can help it. If after 4-5 days she is no better then she needs to see a vet. If she is a bit better but not 100% then you can continue to rest her and see how she progresses. I DO NOT recommend you give her any over the counter medications. Please don't do this. If you are worried about her being in pain and want to give her some medication then I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam so they can prescribe appropriate medication for her. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
