Why is my dog licking her swollen private area after her grooming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | 35 lbs

I have a dog that is a female.. we just took her to the shop to get trimmed. After we got her trimmed she has been acting strange. Like she is always licking her private area. When I checked to see what's wrong.. her area looked very swollen and it just seems off. I have no knowledge about this stuff whatsoever.. but she barely even wants to walk and she seems very irritated and uncomfortable. At first I thought the cuttery place just maybe nipped her by accident but I'm not sure. I need advice!

It looks like it's possible that she has clipper burn from the shavers. I don't think it's an emergency but you should get her to your vet for an exam in the next day or so. In the meantime you can use a topical gel like this one to put on it: ( ) I can tell you that no matter what you put on it this won't heal as long as she is licking it so I suggest you get her a cone until this has healed.
