My puppy has diarrhea, but why is he still sick on a bland diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 3 months and 27 days old | 60 lbs

My puppy has been having diarrhea for a couple days even with me feeding him hamburger and rice. I gave the vet a stool sample and they said there was no parasites but didn’t really give me an answer to why he would be having diarrhea still on a bland diet. Is there a reason he is still having diarrhea?

Hello. Diarrhea can sometimes be quite frustrating to deal with, especially if no parasites are obvious in the stool. Sometime the stool needs to be sent off for special tests to see if an unusual parasite ( like giardia ) or overgrowth of bacteria ( like salmonella ) is responsible for the diarrhea. You can try adding a probiotic like Forti Flora or Proviable to Bentley's food. I like Nutramax's Proviable KP which is essentially a pet version of kaopectate with the addition of probiotics. You can purchase this online. Make sure you follow up with your vet about additional stool test if Bentley's diarrhea does not clear up soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
