My dog has bloody stool and gas, but seems fine. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 7.5 lbs

We went for our afternoon walk and there was bright red blood in his stool. He's not acting any different then usual. I have no money for a vet or hospital trip until next week. He's also been extremely gassy the last few days. Please help!! Any advice??

The fact that there is a small spot there means this could be a mild irritation of the colon or rectum due to hard feces. I I would recommend checking her poop the next few days to see if this repeats. This may be a one time incident, at which point no treatment would be needed. If it does repeat then you can try adding 1-2 tsps of canned pumpkin in his food daily and a probiotic (over the counter Culturelle is highly recommended). You can also give a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle the stomach for the next few days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet. I hope that his stools return to normal soon so that you don’t have to take him in, but if they are not better within 48 hrs or if he starts acting ill, then it’s best to take him in. Hopefully this will at least buy you some time until next week when it’s more feasible for you to take him in. Best wishes and take care!
