My dog keeps licking his nose and swallowing. Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shihpoo | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

My dog (8yr, neutered Shih-Tzu/poodle mix) keeps licking his nose and swallowing. He does it off and on throughout the day, often after playing. He doesn't vomit pant, drool, or show any of his typical nausea symptoms, nor does he seem to be in any pain. (He does have mild arthritis, but isn't bothered by it). He has access to food and water. Should I be concerned?

That can sometimes happen if your dog has a runny nose which can just be due to minor irritation such as dust or a cold. Your dog may lick at his nose to try and clear it away. I'd just keep an eye on him for now, and if you see any symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, discharge that is discolored or not clear, or he shows general signs of illness such as changes in appetite, fever, lethargy, etc, then bring him into your vet for an exam. Making sure the area he is staying in is dust-free may also help if it is allergy related as well.
