My rabbit won't eat her pellets. Is she sick or just being stubborn?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 3.5 lbs

I've noticed that my pet rabbit haven't been eating her pellets. While her food has little treats in it, she doesn't eat many of the pellets themselves. I'm wondering if something is wrong with her stomach or maybe she is stubborn and wants more treats. That's why I need your help.

Thanks for reaching out about Snowball and including pictures. If she is eating her other food (hay, vegetables) and still defecating normal appearing feces, it could be a behavioral change. Is she is not eating well, a veterinary visit is needed as soon as possible. Also, she needs to be spayed as intact female rabbits have a large (>50%) change of uterine cancer by the age of 3 or 4. Other metabolic problems or ingestion of foreign bodies (carpeting, towels, hair from shedding) can lead to gastrointestinal stasis or blockage. All these conditions need to be seen by a veterinarian. Good luck.
