My bird has black stained nostrils and sneezes. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Lovebird | Male | 9 months and 24 days old

I’ve been worrying about this a lot so this is great. My birds have black stained nostrils. At times the stains are dark and other times you can still see a color difference (it’s greyish) but it’s not longer black. Is this normal, because I know they sneeze and our house is really into using garlic and spice when we cook. Hope to here from you soon :))

Without a photo it would be hard to say what is going on or if the area is normal. If the birds are actively sneezing or have discharge from their noses, it could indicate an allergic reaction or a respiratory issue that should be checked out by a vet in person. It is also best not to keep them in a kitchen or other area you cook in as the chemicals from foods, cleaners, or even accidentally flying into hot pans can cause injury.
