Is my 4-month-old puppy's loose stool and crate pooping normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 lbs

We have had our 4 month old jack russell/shih tzu for 2 weeks. He got his first vaccines and wormer last Saturday. (Previous owner gave no vet care.) He is and has been having loose stools (not diarrhea) and poops in his crate nightly even though we don't feed past 6pm and walk him tons. He poops 5-6 times daily. I feed 1/2 cup iams puppy food 8am (he doesn't touch it until lunch) and around 5pm. Is the frequent loose stool normal?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While not normal, this is not always due to a disease per se in a puppy. Sometimes the consistency is not normal while they adjust to their foods. I would continue monitoring him for now and I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian if they do not become solid over the next few weeks or if they become diarrhea. Best of luck!
